Orders for brand new Ranger Rovers, Porsche, Mercedes rise in Kenya

Luxury Cars in Kenya: Orders for brand new Ranger Rovers, Porsche, and Mercedes Benz have skyrocketed in Kenya, thanks to rich individuals in Kenya.

Data from the Kenya Motor Industry Association (KMI) shows that dealers sold a total of 45 units of the high-end cars in the first quarter of the year compared to 26 units that were sold last year. This represented a rise of 73 per cent.

This rise defied a slowdown in the local economy, which has seen a reduction in the second hand cars market. According to a report that appeared in the Business Daily on Friday, among the three top selling models, Mercedes recorded the biggest number of orders.

“Mercedes-Benz was the top-selling luxury brand at 17 units in the first quarter, up from 13 units a year earlier. Unit sales for Land Rover, increased to 12 from 11. Inchcape also sold eight BMW cars in the first quarter, having failed to obtain stocks in the previous period. The company, which sold two Jaguar cars in last year’s first quarter, did not sell any of the high-performance cars in the review period,” the report said.

In the same period, seven Porsche cars were sold. No Porsche cars were sold in the first quarter of last year. Mercedes is sold by DT Dobie, Range Rovers sold by Inchcape, and Porsche sold by Porsche Centre Nairobi. High end luxury vehicles in Kenya are the mark of wealth. This is because their prices can go for as high as Sh. 30 million.

With coronavirus pandemic effects on the Kenyan economy now fully blown, it remains to be seen how the market for luxury  cars in Kenya will perform in the second quarter of the year.
