The three fugitive Kamiti terror fugitives, Musharraf Abdalla Akhulunga alias Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo alias Yusuf, are back at the Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
The three suspects were arrested on Thursday in Mwingi, Kitui County. Reports quoted the police saying that the terrorists were fleeing towards Boni Forest which borders Somalia.
“The terrorists were cornered by security agents hours after residents reported seeing them in Malalani market in Endau location, some 100 kilometres East of Kitui town, where they bought milk, bottled water and biscuits,” a report that appeared in a local daily said.
Malalani borders the Mwingi Game Reserve to the north and South Kitui Game Reserve to the south and has for long been a hideout for terror suspects. The reports added that the fugitives were hiding during the day and trekked under the cover of darkness to avoid being caught.
Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei told the media that three Kamiti terror fugitives were arrested in Mwingemi area as they tried to find their way to the Mwingi-Garissa highway.

Apparently, the residents said they got suspicious when the fugitives asked for directions connecting to Garissa and Boni Forest in Lamu. One of the escapees had swollen legs and was limping.
However, Kenyans on social media have largely raised doubts on the authenticity of the escape. Many have cast theories that the escape was an inside job, and there was no way the suspects would have escaped the highly guarded prison and traveled all the way to Kitui without being noticed.
In addition, the quick changes that were instituted by president Uhuru Kenyatta following the escape and the huge reward figure of Sh. 60 million for anyone who spotted and reported them have also been brought into question.
