Abbey Glory: How I started Abbey Lace Wig business with Sh500

Abbey Lace Wig is one of the popular wig suppliers in the country, and it is known for quality human hair wigs.

Whether you are looking for lace, closure wigs, lace-front wigs, or full-lace wigs, Abbey Lace Wig has them all.

While the company is known for selling wigs mostly to high-end customers, not many know that it started with only Sh500.

Co-Op post

Speaking in a past interview with The Standard, Abbey Lace Wig CEO and co-founder Abbey Glory revealed she got the idea from the church after connecting with a foreign hair supplier.

“My husband and I are grounded in ministry work; my husband is a pastor. One day, a lady spotted me while in a church fellowship and introduced me to a human hair supplier because she felt my hair looked good. She taught my husband and I how to do hair business,” says Glory.

Shortly after learning the business, the couple started it a journey that has since been successful.

With only Sh500 capital, the couple started the business in their house, selling online and marketing the products digitally.

“Working together as a couple has not been difficult, because we have the goal, vision and mission. And I think it is the main reason we have grown this far,” she says.

“Starting up was not easy because we did not have enough capital. Over time, we used our savings to upscale our business and now we make and style wigs,” she adds.

Today, Glory imports wigs from various countries including China, and sells to all her customers who she describes as “those who want to look good.”

“We get our stock from different countries but our main source is China. The main challenge we face during importation is delays. It takes a long time to deliver an order from overseas. Fluctuating prices are also a challenge – sometimes we set a price and then the wigs come with a different price from the supplier.”

At a time when competition is stiff in the industry, Abbey Lace wig thrives through great customer service, branding, packaging, right location, and marketing.

The entrepreneur who is also a PR practitioner adds that without honesty, a business might never survive. She notes that ploughing back profits into the business has played a major role in its growth.

“What we consider important in operating a business is the client. Good customer service is the backbone of any business. Personally, I was called to serve.”
