Boy who sold mangoes to raise fees finally joins Alliance High School

The story of Eric Mumo Sila, a bright 14-year-old boy from Kitengela, is a true testament to the power of community support and the opportunities that can come from it.

Mumo, who scored an impressive 417 marks in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, was about to miss his opportunity for secondary education due to financial constraints.

Now, through the kindness of strangers, Mumo’s life has taken an incredible turn.

It all started with an article in the local newspaper, Daily Nation, which highlighted Mumo’s situation. The young boy had been accepted to attend Oloolaiser High School, a national school in Kajiado County, but could not report for classes because he could not afford school fees.

The article went viral, and soon, people from all over Kenya and abroad offered help.

Within just two days, enough money had been raised to cover Mumo’s four years of high school. But then, something unexpected happened.

The Ministry of Education intervened and ordered Mumo to be transferred to Alliance High School, one of Kenya’s most prestigious high schools.

“We have clear directives from the ministry to ensure the boy reports to Alliance High School today. The ministry has secured a position for the bright boy in the prestigious school,”

Isinya Sub-County District Education Officer Ms Lolei Abduallahi told the newspaper.

On Wednesday, he arrived at Alliance High School, accompanied by his parents and the Isinya Sub-County District Education Officer. Mumo was beaming with joy and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to attend a school that had been his dream.

Mumo’s father, John Sila, was also in awe of the sudden turn of events. He explained that just a few weeks earlier, he had tried to visit Alliance High School to inquire about admission but had been unsuccessful.

“On Monday we left the boy at Oloolaisser high school but on Tuesday we received a call from the sub-county DEO to go and clear him in readiness to join Alliance high school today.

God has opened the door for my son. A few weeks ago, I tried to access the school for enquiry without success,”

he said in an interview with the newspaper.
