New charges on national identity cards and passports have gone into effect. Under the new charges, Kenyans applying for a national identity card for the first time will now pay Sh. 300 while Kenyans applying for a replacement of the national identity card will pay Sh. 1,000.
At the same time, Kenyans applying for national passports will have to cough up more money with those going for the 34-page now required to pay Sh. 7,500.
Previously, this passport has been costing Sh. 4,500. The 50-page passport will now cost Sh. 9,500. This passport has been costing Sh. 6,000.
The charges for an ordinary 66-page passport have been increased from Sh. 7,500 to Sh. 12,500.
Kenyans seeking to replace lost passports will now pay Sh. 20,000, up from the previous fee of Sh. 12,000.

Those seeking replacement of a mutilated passport will pay a fee of Sh. 20,000, from the previous fee of Sh. 10,000.
For a birth or death certificate, applicants will now be required to pay Sh. 200, up from the initial fee of Sh. 50. At the same time, late registration of births or deaths will now attract a fee of Sh. 500, which will be an increase from the previous charge of Sh. 150.
These charges have been effected by the Interior Ministry which is headed by Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
Regaining citizenship after renunciation will cost Sh. 50,000 from the previous fee of Sh. 5,000. Similarly, renouncing citizenship or acquiring citizenship for a spouse from East African Community countries will also cost a fee of Sh. 50,000.
A single entry visa will cost $100 (Sh. 14,458) from the previous $50 (Sh. 7,229) while a multiple entry visa will be charged $500 (Sh. 72,290) as compared to the initial $100 (Sh. 14,458).
Kenyans applying for permanent residence for children born outside of Kenya will pay Sh. 750,000 from the current Sh. 500,000 while spouses to Kenyan citizens will part with Sh. 150,000 from Sh. 50,000.
