Professor, The Examiner among 6 telegram admins arrested over KCSE leakages

Six administrators of Telegram groups have been apprehended for violating Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) rules and regulations.

They stand accused of participating in KCSE malpractices through various groups on different online platforms.

KNEC had previously identified over 32 social media platforms used to share, sell and post examination materials.

Of the total groups, the Communication Authority of Kenya (CAK) noted that 30 groups were active and had a huge base following of parents and students totalling over 193,000 members.

The first suspect to be arrested was Nicholas Kalekwa, aka The Examiner. He is a CRE teacher at a private school based in Kiambu County. His arrest led to over 60,000 members leaving various groups leaving the tally of active members to 130,000.

By 4th November, other admins involved in the fraudulent activities of sharing, selling and posting examination materials in telegram groups were arrested.

One particular group, Teacher’s Updates which had a following of over 18000 people was operated by Martin Mogusu, who went by the alias Professor Martinez.

In the group, he called on parents and students alike to keep calm as he would offer all necessary assistance.

“Student kindly relax we are here for you and we are going to give you all the support you what to make sure success comes back again,” he wrote in a Telegram message.

The DCI warned young people of the illusion that there is a shortcut to amassing wealth. This is after three girls, two aged 19 and one 20, were arrested for various offences.

“The DCI reminds youngsters holding on to the illusion that there exists a shortcut to riches and greatness, other than legitimate ventures, that such fraudulent practices are a sure way to a very small world within high walls.”
