Attorney General issues notice on submission of all marriage certificates

The new Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor, has ordered all licensed ministers of faith and gazetted Registrars of Marriage to submit all marriage certificates.

This directive comes after a notice from the Attorney General’s office and the Department of Justice, issued on September 3rd. All marriage certificates must be submitted to the Registrar of Marriages Office in Nairobi.

The certificates covering all marriages ever conducted in the country must be submitted within 30 days.

“It is notified to the public that in compliance with Sections 53,54,55,56 and 57 of the Marriage Act, Cap 150, all gazetted Registrars of Marriage/Licensed Ministers of Faith are required to submit to the Registrar of Marriages office, Nairobi ALL marriage certificates for the marriages already conducted and in their custody within thirty (30) days from the date hereof,” the statement read in part.

Additionally, the AG instructed the gazetted Registrars of Marriage and licensed ministers of faith to scan and upload both the marriage certificates and their own certificates as registrars.

They must also upload special licenses for any marriages scheduled from September 1st, 2024. The scanned copies should be emailed to [email protected].

Marriage officiators must also submit the original marriage certificates to the Registrar of Marriages in Nairobi within 14 days of the ceremony.
