I sold my house in US to come teach and live in Kenya

Brittney Caldwell’s Christmas trip to Africa took a different turn after experiencing the African culture prompting her to return and ultimately settle in Kenya.

The 30-year-old Virginia native told Travel Noire that she had planned to pay another visit to Africa with a purpose and not just for a vacation.

While in the continent, she spent most of her time in Ghana, where she engaged in charity work providing schools with basic resources that were vital for students’ education.

She notes that most schools in Ghana lacked important amenities prompting her to raise funds to put up a computer laboratory within the vicinity.

“I was so amazed by the children. The children were so smart, yet they managed to stay engaged with so few resources. The building was so worn down, they would literally get rained on some days,” she stated.

She extended her charity to Kenya, where she had successfully secured a teaching job. While her plan was to teach in Ghana, Caldwell says she was unable to secure the job she wanted with an international school in Ghana.

“People ask me, ‘Well, are you in Ghana or Kenya.’ When I began applying for positions, I wasn’t able to secure the job I wanted with an international school in Ghana. But after visiting, I also felt at home in Kenya, so I took a position with an international school here.’’ She said.

She ended up selling her house in US after securing a teaching position at the International School of Kenya (ISK). She notes that working in Kenya enables her to easily traverse to Ghana, which is only a 5-hour trip compared to the US.

She aspires to build more schools in Kenya and across the continent to promote access to education as she continues experiencing the diverse cultures of the African natives.
