Car Age Limit Kenya: The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) has declared that there will be no importation of cars that were manufactured in 2013 from January 1, 2021.
In a memo to importers, returning residents, diplomatic staff, and the general public, the regulatory body said that only right-hand drive motor vehicles whose year of first registration is from January 1 2014 shall be allowed into the country effective January 1, 2021.
Vehicles that enter the port with 2013 registration after December 31 will be ruled to have failed to comply with the eight year age limit rule. These vehicles shall then be rejected at the importers’ expense.

“Vehicles exported to Kenya shall be expected to comply with KS1515:2000-Kenya Code of Practice for inspection of road vehicles while vehicles from countries where Kebs has an inspection agency shall be accompanied with a certificate of roadworthiness issued by the appointed agencies,” the memo from KEBS said.
This declaration comes as car importers lament that they have over 20,000 uncleared vehicles which will be affected by the eight year rule. In January 2020, local dealers in used cars were able to beat the eight year age limit deadline for the sixth straight year. According to the Car Importers Association of Kenya (CIAK), more than 15,000 units ordered between October and early December 2019 made it into the country before December 31 2019.
Kenya imports an average 12,000 units per months mainly from Japan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Singapore and South Africa. Japan dominates the Kenyan second hand car market with more than 80 per cent share. In December 2013- January 2014, more than 2,000 units manufactured in 2006 were held by KEBS on age limit after they arrived in late December and early January 2014. Car Age Limit Kenya.
