As the mystery surrounding the shooting dead of Kabete MP George Muchai, Bizna has pieced together a series of events on how the incident occurred as suggested by emerging CCTV footage. Below is a blow by blow account of how George Muchai was trailed and shot dead.
- Early on Friday evening, Kabete MP George Muchai is seen at the Galileo Lounge sitting at a table. It is believed that he and his family member may have been at the lounge for close to four hours. People pass by to greet them and at certain points, George Muchai wraps his arm on his wife, Susan.
- From the club, at around 2am, George Muchai walks to the parking lot and boards his car, a Toyota Fortuner, with two bodyguards and a driver. His wife and daughter enter a separate salon car.
- They head towards town to drop their driver at the Kencom Bus Stage, where he is to pick a matatu to Huruma where he stays.
- Shortly after passing Uhuru Highway-Kenyatta Avenue roundabout, heading to town, George Muchai’s car stops and the driver hoots.
- Simultaneously, a Mercedes Benz station wagon makes a turn at the round about and follows them.
- The driver hoots again as the vehicle carrying George Muchai’s widow passes. She sees a newspaper vendor running towards the MP’s car to sell a paper.
- A Mercedes Benz rams Georger Muchai’s vehicle on the right side before proceeding to block them near the front. The Mercedes Benz is said to bear Ugandan number plates.
- A gunman wearing a balaclava jumps out welding an AK 47 rifle and shoots at George Muchai’s vehicle, killing all the occupants.
- None tried to respond, leave for a body guard who was seen as having attempted to get out of the under-attack car.
- The gunman then beckons at his two accomplices in the Mercedes Benz, who then come out and take a briefcase, plus two pistols from Georger Muchai’s vehicle. They board the car and speed off. The attack lasts less than a minute and occurs at around 2.52am to 2.53am.
- A few minutes later, with their car far ahead, the wife of George Muchai hears gun shots. At first, she assumes they are from police chasing after gangsters in the area. She takes a U-turn and begins to head back to the place they left her husband, supposedly buying a newspaper.
- About four minutes later, Police Officers believed to be on patrol nearby arrive at the scene of the shooting.
- MP George Muchai’s widow, Susan, arrives shortly thereafter. She notices that George Muchai’s vehicle has been sprayed with bullets. She sees the driver lying motionless. The car’s engine is still revving and her husband, George Muchai, is lying motionless on the bodyguard. She tries to get to the bodies but the police restrain her.
- CCTV cameras at a building close to the Globe Roundabout reportedly show the vehicle negotiating its way out of town!
