A Kenyan national who is set to be deported from Canada on August 25, 2024 has claimed that he is bisexual and might be executed if he is deported back to Kenya. Charles Mwangi says that he moved to Canada in 2019 in search of safety from Kenya.
“I am a bisexual man from Kenya. I fled to Canada in 2019 because I was at risk of being killed back home. Before coming, I was told people like me would be safe in Canada. But now my life is in danger again because I am facing deportation on August 25, 2024,” he said in a plea he made via the Migrant Workers Alliance.
He went on to claim that Kenya is considering instituting punitive laws against homosexuality that will be similar to Ugandan laws against homosexuality. He said that of he is deported and Kenya makes these laws, he will be at risk of getting executed.

“Right now, Kenya is considering passing laws similar to Uganda which would allow people like me to be executed. The media is full of news about the targeting of gay people,” he alleged. “People in Kenya know who I am, and if I am deported, my life will be in grave danger.”
According to a news report by the CTV News, Mwangi and a number of people held a protest outside a local Member of Parliament’s office in Toronto where he delivered a petition with 2,000 signatures calling for his deportation to be stopped.
Mwangi, who is 48 years old, said that he has applied for permanent residency status on humanitarian grounds. However, he says that it will take time before he can receive a decision on his application. He also says that his application does not stop him from being deported.
