Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) boss Ezra Chiloba has said that not all Kenyans should take part in the ongoing sim cards registration.
Chiloba now says that only those who have never been registered are being asked to register. This implies that Kenyans no longer need to re-register.
Chiloba set April 15 as the deadline for the re-registration of the SIM Cards.
Kenyans who had even purchased SIM cards in 2021 were also asked to re-register. CA stated that it aimed at curbing dual or more illegal SIM registrations.
“Looking at the situation across the currently, the compliance levels on SIM card registration are not looking good. How do we know that you are duly registered? By dialing *106# you can know which numbers are registered in your name,” he said.
This follows long lines that have been witnessed at Safaricom agents. Unlike its rivals who have provided the option to register online, Safaricom has stuck with manual registrations and taking of sim owners’ photos even though this is not a requirement.

“The major complaint we have had is the requirement of photos and everything. The regulations do not anticipate that we are going to take a photograph of you.
