The Star: A suspected conman was on Tuesday forced to drag concrete weighing 150 kilograms through the streets of Nyeri while being flogged as punishment for his alleged crimes.
Peter Irungu Maina, aged 38, met the wrath of the public after he was identified as one of the con men who swindled a secondary school student of Sh15,000 meant for school fees earlier in the day.
The student failed to report to school for this term after being conned and has since reported the incident to the police. Irungu was roughed up by Nyeri town residents who forced him to drag the heavy load through the streets.
Angry residents followed Irungu with whips, kicks and blows for more than one hour. The crowd then forced the suspect to drag the concrete using a cart which they tied him to using a padlocked chain.
The midday incident brought business along the town’s busy Gakere road to a standstill as the hapless man dragged the load amid ridicule from residents.
The conman suspect who works as a casual labourer confessed after several beatings the he works with two accomplices who have since gone underground.
The conman was later arrested by police and taken to the Nyeri Central Police stations. Â The residents said they wanted to ensure the suspect learnt a life time lesson.
