Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o is the Controller of Budget in the Republic of Kenya. She was appointed to this position on December 4, 2019, with her primary role being to oversee and report on implementation of the budgets of the National and County Governments to the National Assembly, Senate, County Assemblies and the Executive on a quarterly basis.
Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o replaced Agnes Odhiambo, the first Controller of Budget, whose eight-year non-renewable term came to an end on 27 August 2019.
She holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool, UK. Her doctoral research thesis was on Strategic Workforce Planning within the context of the Kenyan Public Service.
She also holds a Master of Business Administration degree in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi. She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Nairobi.
In 2006, she became a certified Sacco professional after a year of study at the Strathmore University, Nairobi, on Governance of Savings and Credit Societies. Dr. Nyakang’o is also a Certified ISO 9001:2008 Internal Auditor.
She is also a Certified Public Accountant, a Practicing Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, and a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya.
In addition, she is a member of the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya and an active member of the Women on Boards Network with hands-on skills in corporate governance.

Dr. Nyakang’o has previously worked as the Director of Finance at the Africa International University, in Karen, Nairobi, Kenya. Between January and December 2019, she served as a lecturer for Public Sector Finance at the KCA University, Town Campus.
