Dennis Mutara: Sad story of gospel singer who fell into alcoholism, depression, cultism

Dennis Mutara was at one time one of the finest gospel musicians from the Central region. Today, the singer is barely recognizable.

Over the past few years, Mutara has sank into troubles that have been allegee to revolve around alcoholism, depression and alleged ties to cultic traditional organization at his home area in Murang’a County.

The singer’s latest troubles were brought to light by philanthropist singer Karangu Muraya on Sunday, September 10, 2023. Karangu, who visited Mutara indicated that he was not in a good and healthy condition. This was clear from the photos of the singer that Karangu shared.

In 2021, Mutara was taken to a rehabilitation center, which he left in June 2021. Earlier in March 2021, he had been admitted at thr Avenue Hospital for detox before he proceeded to the rehabilitation centre. Reports, though, claimed that he relapsed back into alcoholism shortly after leaving the rehabilitation centre.

All along though, Mutara has denied the claims that he had sank into alcoholism and was suffering from depression.

In 2020, Mutara was involved in a road accident, aftet which he alleged that his fellow gospel singers were working to push him out of the industry.

“A singer will be eaten by their fellow musicians. You never know what happened to me. It was my star that was shining and they tried to put it off. They cut my roots,” he said in an interview.

It is alleged that apart from his struggles with alcohol, Mutara has also been a member of weird Kikuyu traditional cults known as ‘Gwata Ndai’. He has however never admitted to these allegations.

In a previous interview, Mutara claimed that people saying he was an alcoholic and a member of a traditional cult were out to defame him.

“I have watched in dismay as my name trends in manufactured scandals. I have been featured as a man who backtracked and became an alcoholic and even joined a cult that promotes female genital mutilation,” he said.

He claimed that he had been put on various medication to manage his condition and that the process had been tough on his physique and mental wellness.

He added that as a result of the accident he had suffered, he had developed a nervous system problem that required costly prescription medicines to deal with.
