Kenya’s deputy president Rigathi Gachagua impeached! Gachagua was impeached by the Members of the National Assembly on Tuesday night.
The total number of votes cast in favour of the impeachment motion were 281 while the total number of votes that were cast against the impeachment motion were 44. One member of parliament abstained from voting.
In the impeachment motion, eleven counts were brought up against the Gachagua. Each of the eleven counts was required to meet a threshold support of 233 Members of Parliament in order to pass.
At least 233 Members of Parliament were required to be in the National Assembly before any voting could take place. 233 is the two thirds of the 349 members of parliament threshold that is required by law.
The c Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is by law now required to inform the Speaker of the Senate of the resolution to impeach the DP within two days. The Speaker of the Senate will upon receipt of the communication convene a meeting of the Senate within seven days to hear the charges against Gachagua.

James Gakuya – voted no, Julius Mawathe – voted no and Mark Mwenje – was absent, Babu Owino – was absent.
