Senior Counsel Paul Muite has informed the senate that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua fell ill and was rushed to hospital during the lunch break process at his Senate impeachment trial on Thursday.
Muite broke the news after the DP disappeared from the Senate before his cross-examination in his impeachment trial.
“The sad reality is that the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya has been taken very sick, and as I address Mr Speaker and this House, he is in the hospital.” Muite told the Senate.
Without disclosing what the DP was ailing from, Muite said he had received the information on short notice and requested time to assess Gachagua’s condition before proceeding.

“Allow me time to go and visit him and asses his situation and report back before the House at 5.00 PM,” he said.
Gachagua was expected to take the stand as his own witness in the case that seeks to oust him. However, he was no where to be seen at the Senate as the House resumed for the afternoon session.
His absence left his legal team scrambling, with some lawyers, including National Assembly lawyer Eric Gumbo, pushing for the trial to continue in his absence.
Speaker Kingi, however, suspended the sitting until 5 pm.
