Dr Collins Ley: Founder and CEO of VDS Africa and Leyworld Company

Meet Collins Ley, doctor of eCommerce and E- business. Collins is the founder and CEO of VDS Africa and Leyworld Companies, both based in Nairobi.

Describe yourself in 5 words?

I am Dr Collins Ley an ecommerce and E-business entrepreneur. An internet believer

  • What’s the story behind VDS Africa?

When I started VDS Africa my soul was burning with only two things, videos and site security. I wanted something different and secure. VDS came from the slogan Video sales which I believed people could watch the product videos before purchasing. The security is from the fact that we only list businesses with specific locations. Therefore, VDS is a very secure site containing product videos to watch.

  •  What inspired you to start VDS Africa?

I was inspired by the fact that videos can sell better than images. Here people can buy something they have watched its features and functionality.

  •  What did you have to sacrifice to turn your passion into a business?

I had to sacrifice my study time to grow this business. I had to work until late in the nigh building audience on social media. I had to cut my luxuries to build the site.

  • What do you love most about your job?

I live by the dream that one day through VDS people of Kenya and beyond will enjoy the internet of things. They will find trusted products and services easily at the comfort of their home.

  Who’s your competition?

I face stiff competition from OLX ,PIGIA ME ,CHEKI  etc. but its only with time that VDS will sink in to the bloodstream of  Kenyans. Everyone will get its justice.

  • Who is your role model? Do you emulate them?

My role model is the founder of Amazon -Jeff Bezos. Though our sites are different I belief we share the same traits. We both belief in the power of internet

  • What challenges do you face?

We do have challenges but they are manageable since I believe in “Not overthinking.”

Since you started, have you ever felt like giving up?

I once felt like giving up but there was no room for that. I have invested too much in the business to give up.

  • Your favorite quote?

Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people – Steve Jobs.

  •  Where do you think your business will be in the next 10 years?

In the next ten years, my business will be the point of referral for products and services in Africa.

  •  Ever started another business?

I actually started another business popularly known as Leyworld. Where I ventured in real estate, recruitment and fashion industry. It is all about internet too, all about what you are looking for:  a Job/staff, a Property or trendy fit/wear. All are found in Leyworld.

  •  How do you treat your employees?

They are my best team, my business and sincerely my growth. I love them.

  • The best channel to get the word out about your business?

The best way is just the internet through social media, bloggers and other forums.

  • How do you network

Networking is a key in this business. I do blind mails, attend events, workshops, expos and other community forums.

  • What are your words of wisdom to other start-ups?

Start small and think internet-wise. That’s the simplest way to get started. That 10,000 bob is enough for you to start your business.
