Man with PhD, 4 Masters selling vegetables, earns more than lecturer salary

Co-Op post

Oftentimes, people with many educational accolades lead lives of exclusive luxury. All doors of fortune and opportunity seemingly swing open to them upon request.

With 4 master’s degrees and a PhD, Dr. Sandeep Singh, a Punjabi man, lives a life that contrasts the norm. The 39-year-old sells vegetables to ensure his survival.

He has completed a PhD in law and holds four master’s degrees in subjects such as political science, journalism, and Punjabi. Additionally, he is currently pursuing further studies.

With his considerable intellectual power, Sandeep was employed as a contractual professor at Punjabi University’s department for 11 years. However, he resigned from his position due to unfortunate circumstances, including salary cuts and irregular pay.

“I had to leave the job because I didn’t usually get my salary on time and there were frequent pay cuts. It had become difficult for me to make ends meet with that job.”

He walks around town pulling his vegetable cart with a signboard written ‘PhD Sabzi Wala’. He visits several homes in a day to see his produce.

Notably, Dr. Singh earns more money from his hawking job than he did as a professor.

“That’s why I switched to selling vegetables for the survival of me and my family,” he said.

After working, he returns home and studies for his exam. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Sciences at Lovely Professional University.

The professor maintains that he does not regret becoming a lecturer as it was his dream as a young kid. He has not abandoned this passion albeit taking a teaching break.

Dr Singh hopes that one day he will be able to open his own tuition centre after accumulating enough savings.
