Top Nairobi school shuts down after 30 years of operations

As businesses continue to grapple with the harsh realities of the continuously derailing Kenyan economy, educational institutions have not been left out of this plague.

One such school that has opted to close its doors permanently is the East End Junior School located on Outer Ring Road in Tena Estate. This school has been operating for 30 years since it was founded in 1993.

An internal memo issued by the school administration that has gone viral on social media has confirmed the news to be true. The school had their first KCPE session in 2000

”Since it started, the Directors have devoted their time and resources to make it what it is today,” the official letter read in part.

Speaking to a local media group, the school director Gachango Munyambu refuted all claims that the letter was falsified.

“They are not false claims. We really are closing permanently and the reason has been given in the memo,” he asserted.

In the detailed memo, it explained that Mr and Mrs Munyambu, who are both over 70 years of age have mutually decided to retire and close the school, due to the harsh economic circumstances the country is faced with.

“The latter is exerting a lot of pressure on the Directors, and because of their age they have opted to retire and close the school from next year,” the letter continued.

The memo addressed to parents and/or guardians took them by surprise with many of them storming onto social media to wail their grievances of the bad economy. One parent by the username Lord Chitechi took to X (formerly twitter) to lament over the school’s closure.

“My kid’s school has closed for good citing the harsh business environment in the country,” he tweeted.

Lord Chitechi loved the school’s playground and its role in laying a solid foundation for the children.

Another user Kariz Rizkah acknowledged he lived in close proximity to the school, asserting that it was the best place for early childhood education in the area.

“When I used to reside in this neighborhood 10 years ago it was the best for early childhood education. We are not doing well as a country if such institutions can go down, sad to even think about it,” he noted.
