Education Ministry changes half term dates for all schools

The Education Ministry has revealed that learners in all public primary and secondary schools will break for the second term’s half-term late than communicated earlier.

In a letter dated May 24, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang announced that the half term will run from June 26 to June 28.

The new changes defy the 2024 school calendar, which had indicated that the half-term would run from June 20 to June 23.

According to Kipsang, the Ministry made the changes following the disruption of the opening dates for the second term due to heavy rains that had caused floods in various parts of the country.

“Following the disruption of the opening dates, it has been decided that the half-term dates for term two 2024 be revised,” read the memo in part. The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules.” Kipsang stated.

Earlier, the Ministry had urged schools to devise a plan to ensure syllabus coverage within the stipulated time as per the year’s school calendar, maintaining that the term would not be extended.

The school calendar for the year shows that The August holiday is set to begin on August 5 and end on August 23.

Learners will then resume for the third term on August 26, 2024, until October 25, 2024. The long holiday is set to begin on October 28, 2024, until January 3, 2025.

Candidates are expected to sit for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and the Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) exams from October 28 to October 31, which is four days.

The KCSE examination, on the other hand, will run for three weeks, from November 4 to November 22.
