Equity Bank has sent an advisory note to its Equitel customers alerting them on a possible lending scam. This follows text messages from a 0780096888 number purporting to offer soft MPesa loans at a 5 per cent interest that Equitel customers have been getting.
The cautionary note from Equity Bank declares that Equitel is not offering any M-PESA soft loans. “Equitel is not giving any MPESA soft loan. Do not call or text the sender. Forward such messages by SMS to 333, SMS is free,” reads the text messages sent by Equitel to its customers.
The SMS doing rounds has been claiming to be from Equity Bank.
The SMS seen by Bizna reads: “Equity Bank Dear Equitel Customer: M-PESA soft loan now Available at 5 per cent interest @ Ksh. 140,000/= 100,000/= 50,000/= Call or SMS on 0780096888 Equity Bank.”
