Ernest Langes: Farmer raking Sh2 million weekly from 30-acre tomato farm in Samburu

Tomato farming is one of the most lucrative ventures in agribusiness, given the huge demand for tomatoes both locally and internationally.

For Ernest Langes, tomato farming has been a game-changer after years of losses in livestock farming, primarily due to prolonged drought and banditry attacks in his Suguta Valley of Samburu County.

These, among other factors, saw him explore opportunities in crop farming, a journey that has since been a success.

The farmer owns a 30-acre tomato farm that hosts healthy fruits, highlighting Langes’ good farming practices.

To ensure the tomatoes thrive in the area defined by persistent drought, Langes has constructed three dams to ensure a reliable water supply.

He notes that this method of using dams and a gas-powered generator to pump water has proven to be cost-effective.

With a workforce of about 50 employees, Langes earns an estimated income of Sh2.1 million weekly.

”Tomato crop is doing very well in this climate, and it’s in high demand both locally and outside the country,’’  Langes said in an interview with Citizen TV.

He further adds that tomato farming is safer than livestock farming as it is not attractive to bandits. His produce attracts customers from as far as Uganda who flock to his farm to purchase the fruit.
