Jumia donates 100,000 face masks to health workers fighting Covid-19

Face Masks in Kenya: Leading e-commerce firm Jumia Kenya has donated 100,000 masks to the national government. The donation is part of Jumia’s support in the fight against coronavirus.

The donation of the 100,000 face masks was delivered at AMREF Health Africa Headquarters along Lang’ata Road on Thursday and received by the National Response Committee under AMREF and Red Cross.

“Front line workers all across the country are protecting us and leading the fight against COVID-19. These heroes deserve our full support – and it is with this aim that we are making a small contribution to the fight,” Jumia chief executive officer Sam Chappatte said. “E-commerce platforms like Jumia, with cashless payments and contactless delivery capabilities, are uniquely positioned to be part of Kenya’s response strategy to this pandemic. And stand ready to serve.”Face Masks in Kenya

When receiving the donation, Amref Health Africa’s Group chief executive officer Githinji Gitahi said that the face masks will be distributed to health workers responding to possible and confirmed cases.

“The face masks will be distributed to the health workers, who are on the front line responding to suspected and confirmed cases of #COVID19,” Dr. Gitahi said.

Jumia Kenya has also offered the support of its integrated logistics network to support the distribution of essential food and PPE equipment. The firm has partnered with Posta Kenya to deliver the much-needed basic essentials to customers throughout Kenya. “Jumia is committed to get customers the products they need over this challenging period. We are in daily communication with manufacturers to improve the consistency of supply – and have taken measures to prevent price gouging and hoarding behaviour” said Mr. Chappatte. “We want every household to have access to sanitary and basic essentials at a fair price.”

Jumia’s additional actions in supporting the fight against COVID-19 include:

  • Facilitation of social distancing by enabling consumers to buy online. By offering contactless and cashless delivery options, we eliminate physical contact and potentially reduce person to person infection.
  • Providing access to affordable basic foods and sanitary essentials on their platform. By partnering with thousands of vendors, we are able to control prices and hoarding behaviour.
  • Offering Jumia’s logistics networks to help distribute test kits, health pamphlets and key products to where they are needed (countrywide).
  • Leveraging our team in China to source critical PPE equipment quickly and at affordable prices. So far we have sourced millions of masks and PPE for governments & private healthcare providers in Kenya & across Africa. Face Masks in Kenya
