Meet father, son who sat KCSE together, scored impressive results

Hardly does one come across stories of siblings who have sat KCSE national exams together. What’s even rarer are cases of parents and their children sitting the same exams.

In the 2024 session, one such case was reported from Homa Bay County. 38-year-old human rights activist Evans Oloo and his 17-year-old son, Fabjames Omondi did the KCSE exams together.

When the results were released on Thursday 9th January, Evans Oloo scored a D plain while his son managed to pull off a B plain.

In an interview with Nation Africa, the man narrated he had a tough childhood in Lwanda Village, Suba. His education studies were derailed when his parents passed away on the same day in 1997 after a brief illness.

Mr Oloo sat his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams at Ongongo Primary School in the year 2000. He scored 258 marks. However, he was unable to proceed to secondary school due to a lack of school fees funds.

In 2001, he began hustling and taking technical courses, particularly in welding. Later on, he opened a workshop where he fabricated metals to make gates.

“I later got married in 2004 and was blessed with two children,” he told the Nation reporter.

Other than running a welding shop, Mr Oloo runs an NGO christened Interface Community. He asserted that his children will never go through the same challenges that he did in his younger life.

“I did not get an opportunity to go to secondary school. But that does not mean my children should also not learn,” he stated.

Mr Oloo’s first-born daughter is in her second year of studies pursuing a law degree at Maseno University. She sat and passed her Form Four exams at Ogande Girls.

Due to his passion for human activism and ensuring his children have a good life, Mr Oloo decided to enrol and register for the 2024 exams so that he could complete his secondary education. His dream is to become a Magistrate one day.

“I enrolled for adult education and was able to attend classes. I am planning to retake the test this year so that I can get a grade that will enable me to proceed to university,” he said.
