Four ministries lose expensive vehicles, motorcycles to theft days after purchase

Four government ministries lose expensive vehicles, motorcycles and other items all valued at tens of millions of Kenyan shillings as revealed in an Audit carried out by Ms. Gathungu, Auditor-General.

Auditor General, Nancy Gathungu revealed that the allegedly reported ministries include the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

In 2019, the Ministry of Education was rid of a brand new Fortuner vehicle whose value was Kshs. 8,355,900, just days after the purchase of the car. Similarly, another vehicle belonging to the ministry of Infrastructure disappeared as two other cars belonging to the Ministry of Trade and Industry vanished.

“Available information indicates that the management acquired a project vehicle – Toyota Fortuner Reg. No. GKB 193V at a cost of Kshs. 8,355,900 in May 2019.”

Said Mrs. Gathungu at an audit of the State Department for University Education books of accounts for the year to June 2021.

“However, physical verification and motor vehicle records revealed that the vehicle was missing.”

The Toyota Fortuner was specially purchased to be designated for a special project for the Easter and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence under credit number 5798-KE.

“The project Management explained that the vehicle was stolen within days after purchase in a carjacking incident and this was reported to the police”

She stated.

At the Ministry of Infrastructure, a vehicle worth Kshs. 6.5 Million was stolen.

The vehicle’s registration number, GKB 2IIJ belonging to the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology was stolen on July 3rd, 2020.

Ms. Gathungu noted that there were delays by authorities to aid in the recovery of two other vehicles of undetermined value from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The total items that were stolen are four motor vehicles, six motorcycles and one laptop. These stolen items were indicated in the asset register and asset verification report.
