Prof. George Magoha dies at Nairobi Hospital

Former Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has died. Emerging reports say that Magoha died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

He had been admitted after suffering from cardiac arrest, which is suspected to have been the cause of his death.

His death was confirmed by his wife Dr. Barbra Magoha. “Yes it is true. He is no more,” his wife told a local media house. Magoha was 71.

Magoha had been rushed to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon after falling ill.

Magoha was this week revealed to have been mourning the death of his brother Alex Nyabera Magoha.

According to an announcement in a local daily, Nyabera had passed away in Allen, Texas in the Uniter States on December 6, 2022. The cause of his death was however not made public.

“The cortege will leave Aga Khan Hospital Funeral Home Kisumu on Saturday, January 28, 2023 for a memorial requiem mass at Township Primary School Yala followed by interment at his Umiru home in Yala, Gem sub-county,” the announcement read in part.

In August 2021, Magoha lost his other brother, Charles Agunga Magoha who died in Sweden.

Days earlier, the former CS George Magoha took a new job at Maseno University. He was appointed as a Professor of Surgery at the Masinde Muliro University.

Before he was appointed as Education Cabinet Secretary by former president Uhuru Kenyatta in March 2019, Magoha had served as the chairman of the Kenya National Education Council (KNEC).

He had previously also served as the University of Nairobi’s Vice-Chancellor between 2005 and 2015. He was replaced at Education by former district commissioner Ezekiel Machogu.
