Green Park Estate Demolition: Agony has gripped some home owners at the upmarket Green Park Estate that is located at Athi. Thisbisbafter WARMA placed an order for the demolition ofbsone houses in the estate.
According to WARMA, some eight houses have been marked and shoukd be brought down soon. The agency has said that these houses are buikt on riparian reserve.
However, the homeowners at the estate have vowed to resist the move to demolish their houses.
A few months ago, houses at the estate were submerged by waters after the nearby Stoni River Athi burst its banks. There were claims that the estate had been built on encroached land. These claims were initially dismissed.
Following the destruction, residents whose property and houses were damaged by flood water blamed NEMA for their woes.
But the National Environment and Management Authority (NEMA) said that the section of the upmarket Green-Park Estate in Athi River that was flooded after Stoni Athi River burst its banks does not lie on riparian land.
NEMA director-general Geoffrey Wahungu said that the Sh. 30 billion development is simply situated in a low-lying zone.
“Athi Plains, River Athi and surroundings are low-lying and some even below river flow level. Because of unpredictable rains, lots of silt and debris, the river overshot its bank by over 100 metres causing serious damage to property owners at the estate,” the official said.
