Heartbreaking details of UoN student found dead outside hostel

Mystery surrounds the death of a University of Nairobi (UoN) Kabete campus student whose body was found lying lifeless outside his hostel on Wednesday evening.

The first-year student is believed to have died by suicide as he had demonstrated unusual behaviors prior to his death.

A source who spoke to a local daily revealed that the unidentified student, described as an introvert, had developed some signs of unrest, including leaving the hostel very early in the morning and returning late.

The source added that the student had opened up about his financial struggles and was eyeing the government scholarship.

“He kept to himself most of the time…He had some financial issues, and in the last two days, he went to the Anniversary Towers because he had issues with the government scholarship,” the source, who sought anonymity, stated.

“He had not received the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds,” he added.

The student, who was studying Agricultural Education and Extension, was found with Ksh5 in his pocket and a note bidding goodbye to his friends and family.

Suicide cases among University students have been on the rise this year in the country, a worrying trend for education stakeholders who are now seeking ways to address the problem.

Some of the causes of suicides in universities include depression, substance abuse, unhealthy romantic relationships, and family rows.

Various bodies comprising counselors and psychologists have been encouraging young Kenyans to reach out for help when experiencing any mental health issues.
