The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has revealed the highest and lowest paying jobs in Kenya today. KNBS puts the average monthly private sector income at Sh. 69,103 while the monthly public sector income is at Sh.68,632.
According to the KNBS survey, people who work in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities have some of the worst salaries in the formal sector. They earn an average gross of Sh. 24,575 per month.
People who are employed to do household activities and those involved in undifferentiated goods and services are the second lowest earners. They earn Sh. 24,908 per month.
Those employed to do real estate activities earn Sh. 27,280 per month. Those in the agriculture, forestry and fishing jobs take home Sh. 31,470 per month.
Kenyans who work in accommodation and food service activities earn Sh. 37,394 per month.
The KNBS survey also shows that manufacturing employees take home Sh. 47,531, mining and quarrying workers take home Sh. 55,513, while construction gives Sh. 63,694 salaries. People working in arts, entertainment and recreation take home Sh. 65,602.
People who work in the non-governmental sectors and multilateral bodies, including the World Bank, United Nations and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have the highest salaries with an average monthly pay of Sh. 313,084.
In the private sector, workers involved in human health and social work activities earn an average of Sh. 89,763 per month. Their colleagues in the public sector earn Sh. 65,614 more for the same jobs.

In the private sector’s electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply, workers earn an average monthly income of Sh. 173,104. Those in administrative and support service activities take home Sh. 144,539.
Workers in transportation and storage activities earned an average monthly income of Sh. 128,011.
Public administration and defence and compulsory social security workers earn an average of Sh. 56,014 per month.
Workers employed by the government in the education sector earn Sh. 58,853 on average. Public sector workers in financial and insurance activities earn Sh. 163,925 on average every month. Workers in human health and social work activities with Sh. 155,377.
