How TVET institutions will henceforth carry out learning activities

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in the country are set to adopt a new learning system to prepare learners adequately in the ever-changing job market.

The new system, which will take effect next month, will see TVETS move away from traditional theory-based learning and take a more practical, competency-based approach, reducing the cost and time taken in training.

TVET Principal Secretary Esther Muoria said under the new system, learners in TVET institutions will undertake their preferred course in modules and get a certification for every level undertaken.

“We are going to teach as very little theory as possible if not actually none, so that if it is communication, we are going to embed it within the trade area so that the communication that is taught is in accordance with that trade,” Dr Muoria said.

“We are shifting from a situation where our young people will be in an institution, training for a whole year. We are doing this so that we give them an opportunity to transit to the world of work,” she added.

Additionally, learners will be assessed and certified through a micro-credential system, mostly used to accredit learners undertaking short training programs.

Unlike the traditional system, which was keen on entry requirements, the new system will accommodate all learners wishing to study in TVETS, including those already working in the informal sector.

“In another one month, we will make that curriculum completely ready so that those who are coming in May will have the same entry requirements. We are saying that whether you are coming in as a Class 8 drop-out or as a Form-Four leaver with an A or an E, all of them will have the same entry behavior. They will start from the same level and they will be able to progress to their highest level or up to where they feel they are ready to join the world of work.”

The PS explained that the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council would oversee the quality of the revised syllabus, while the TVET Authority will regulate the implementation process.
