JKUAT and Moi universities bag Sh. 17 billion laptops tender

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) together with Moi University have won a lucrative Sh. 17 billion tender to supply primary schools in Kenya with laptops.

The consortium of Moi University and South African research and investing firm JP SA Couto will oversee the supply, installation and commissioning of the digital learning solution for schools in 26 counties. JKUAT together with its partner Positivo BGH will supply and install the laptops in 21 counties.

The tender and the subsequent supply of all local primary schools with laptops follows a promise to introduce laptops to class one pupils in all public schools that was made by president Uhuru Kenyatta and deputy president William Ruto prior to the 2013 general elections.

Co-Op post

The tendering process has been arduous, with several tenders being canceled at the last minute.

Moi University and JKUAT beat the Kenyatta University & BRCK Ltd/Guangzhou Institute of Technology consortium, the Multimedia University consortium which consists of Symphony Technologies Limited & Equity Holding Group together with Tsinghua TongFang co Ltd.

Big technology firms such as Hewlett Packard which contested alone and Lenovo, which was in a group with Trans Business Machine, Specicom & Ensure Services lost the race. Huawei Technologies together with University of Nairobi also fell short of the set requirements.
