John Allan Namu: Amount of money I earned at KTN, NTV. My wedding regrets

Celebrated investigative journalist John Allan Namu has opened up on the salaries he earned while working for the Standard Media Group’s KTN and the Nation Media Group’s NTV.

John Allan Namu has also offered insights on some of his regrets in life and what he thinks he could have done better.

Namu revealed that when he started out as a reporter at KTN in 2005, his starting salary was Sh. 35,000. This amount increased over the years to Sh. 160,000 following a set of promotions and salary increases.

This was also the salary he got when he switched from KTN to NTV in 2010. NTV then raised this figure to Sh. 245,000 per month.

The salary would rise even further when three years later he moved back to KTN. He was offered a salary of Sh. 400,000 per month and Sh. 100,000 clothing allowance.

“I was getting married and we had a child with another on the way. That money made sense and that was part of the reason why I left. I stayed there (Nation) for two to three years and got one salary raise and a bonus,” said John Allan Namu.

“That really helped me to save more, and with the types of schools that I enrolled my children at. It did change how I lived.”

Namu also talked about how the budget for his wedding weighed him and his spouse down. In retrospect, he regretted the way he handled this and said ue could have done things differently.

Apparently, Namu and his wife splashed Sh. 1.5 million on their wedding in 2010. He sais that he had planned for a small wedding with 200 to 250 people, but ended up with 600 people.

“Our cap was 250 people, and the list just kept growing and growing. We were told to sit in a corner and wait for the budget. If there is one big regret I have, it is caving into that pressure. That money would have done so much,” said Namu.

“I took a loan to pay for part of the budget. My wife had to sell her car, and we used our savings.”
