Final hours of top journalist Sean Cardovillis before his death

The final moments of top asports journalist Sean Cardovillis would not have betrayed the unfortunate fate that would befell him on Saturday morning.

The celebrate sports journalist was found dead outside his home on Saturday morning, hours before he was scheduled to host athletics champion Faith Kipyegon on his show at Capital FM.

Hours earlier, Cardovillis had been active on social media and on WhatsApp. On Twitter, Cardovillis had shared that he would be posting Kipyegon. He shared this at 1.15pm on Friday, 22 hours before his death.

Capital FM has since shared that the interview had been recorded earlier on for sharing on Saturday.

A Kenyan who was in a WhatsApp Group with him also shared that he had posted in the group.

On Friday, Cardovillis was also following and updating on the WRC Rally that was ongoing in Greece.

At 12:52 pm on Friday, he shared a video taken at the event with drivers maneuvering a challenging stretch of the race.

“This ditch caught out many drivers, including World Champion Kalle Rovanperä,” he tweeted.

At 1.50pm, he tweeted; “UPDATE: SS4 was cancelled for safety reasons due to spectators being found in “NO GO AREAS”. This turned out to be his final tweet.

According to detectives who responded to an alarm at his apartment, Cardovillis was found dead on Saturday morning outside his house where he lived alone.

The police said that the body was found at his staircase by a cleaner who had gone to clean the area leading to his house on the fourth floor of the apartment where he lived.

The cleaner raised alarm and an ambulance was called to the scene together with the police. Sean was declared dead by medics at the scene.

Over the last few months, Cardovillis is reported to have been suffering from an illness. In February 2022, his family went public with an appeal for financial help.

This was after Cardovillis was admitted at the high dependency unit of a hospital in Nairobi with lung complications.

“Sean has been hospitalized for a while now. The chest pains he had been experiencing for a while turned into pneumonia and one of his lungs collapsed, he also had an infection around his heart,” his family had said.
