Former late president Mwai Kibaki’s daughter Judy Kibaki has received the greenlight from the High Court to auction a Nairobi businessman over unpaid rent.
Judy will auction Kevin Obia over rent arrears amounting to Sh. 3.1 million for a house located at Chalbi Drive in Lavington.
Among the items that have been collected from the house for auctioning are two double-door refrigerators, an electric burner cooker, and eight pieces of dining chairs, a five-seater sofa set, a vacuum cleaner, beds and beddings, flower pots among others.
The auction will be carried out by Wiskam Auctioneers whom Judy Kibaki engaged following the court decision.
The decision court was issued by Milimani Principal Magistrate B.M Cheloti. It involved the lifting of a temporary order that Obia had received from the court barring the auctioning of his household goods over the unpaid rent.
Judy had told the court that Obia had defaulted on rent payment of Sh. 2.5 million as of February 2023. She also noted that she and Obia had entered into a tenancy agreement of a two year lease at a monthly rent of Sh. 350,000 payable on the first day of every month.
“Since occupying the suit premises, the applicant has consistently defaulted on payment of the monthly rent,”sshe told the court.
“That it is unconscionable for me to be restrained from interfering with the applicant’s tenancy yet he is defaulting tenant. Such an order defies all legal safeguards of a property owner.”

She said that as of January 31, he had rent arrears of Sh. 2.78 million. On February 28, Obia paid Sh. 996,000 after he was served with a demand letter.
Obia, who is also known as Kevin Kleigh, alias The Don, was recently sentenced to one year in jail for defrauding an Australian national of Sh. 13.7 million in a fake gold scam. He also got the option of a Sh. 300,000 fine which he opted to pay than serve jail time.
