2024 KCSE: Student who missed three terms due to illness record straight As in all subjects

Tears of joy filled Kapsabet Boys High School on Thursday, January 9, after the school emerged as the best in the Rift Valley Region in the just-concluded Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education(KCSE) exam.

According to the KCSE results announced on Thursday by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, Kapsabet Boys High School had 65 straight As with a mean grade of 10.157.

One student, Brian Matoke Otucho, wowed many with his impressive performance despite missing months of classes while undergoing treatment.

Brian emerged as the best student at Kabsabet Boys alongside Mark Kibet, each registering a Mean grade of A of 84 points and hitting the top score of A in all subjects.

According to media reports, Brian who says his dream is to become a pilot, had missed three consecutive terms after being diagnosed with a mental illness that took a toll on his health, leaving his parents worried.

However, he was able to catch up just before the exams, evidenced by his results.

“We were worried as a family about the setback, but today we are in a celebration mood for his incredible performance. We thank God for the A of 84 points,” His mother Consalia Otucho said.

The institution’s Chief Principal Kipchumba Maiyo admitted that Brian was a bright student and never missed the top scorers list in his class.

“Throughout his stay at Kapsabet Boys, Brian was always at the top. His condition concerned the whole school community and we did our best to see him continue learning both in school and at home,” he said.

The 2024 KCSE exams officially began on October 22 and ended in November. The exam took place in 10,755 centers, with a record-high 965,501 candidates, an increase from 903,138 in 2023.

Some 1,693 candidates scored grade A, while a total of 246,391 scored direct entry to university grades of above C+ compared to 201,133 in 2023.

Those who scored A- were 7,743 candidates, while 19,150 candidates scored B+. Meanwhile, a total of 43,120 scored B plain,75,347 scored B minus, and 99, 338 scored C+.

On the other hand, 6,889 candidates attained over C-minus and above (49.41%), while those with D plus and above were 605,774 (62.76%).
