US Prosecutors: How Kang'ethe murdered Maggie Mbitu, kept body for 30hrs

Kevin Kang’ethe brutally murdered his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu in the town of Halifax, Massachusetts between October 30 and November 1, 2023 in one of the most brutal and merciless killings in history.

Details of this murder were laid bare by US prosecutors on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 when Kang’ethe – whose full name is Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kang’ethe –  was presented before court in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

According to the prosecutors, Kevin Kang’ethe too a Lyft ride on October 30, 2023, from his home in Lowell and headed to Ms Mbitu’s workplace. He met her at this workplace just as she was getting off work at around 11 pm.

He then allegedly drove her back home in the vehicle that she was driving. This vehicle was registered in Kang’ethe’s name but at the time was being used by the victim Margaret Mbitu –  also known as Maggie Mbitu.

At one point between the time the two left Ms Mbitu’s workplace and the time they arrived at his home, Kevin Kang’ethe attacked Mbitu repeatedly in the car with a knife. The attack caused her multiple injuries. There were ten wounds on her face and neck alone. Ms Mbitu died from the injuries while still in the car.

Upon realizing that he had killed her, Kang’ethe then hatched a plan on how to dispose the body. He drove around looking for a suitable place where he could dispose the body.

At one point, Ms. Mbitu’s relatives and coworkers called her phone wondering where she was. Kang’ethe answered two of these phone calls. He said that she had suffered an injury and couldn’t come to the phone.

He then discarded Mbitu’s mobile phone in a dumpster at around an area known as Chelsea. Kang’ethe then left her body in the front seat of the vehicle for some 30 hours. According to the prosecutors, the vehicle was heavily tinted.

After about 30 hours, he went back to the car and drove to Logan Airport where he dumped the car. Ms Mbitu’s body was left in car, lying in the reclined front passenger seat. The body was covered with random items to make it hard to see. Kang’ethe then booked a one-way flight ticket to Nairobi and left from the same airport.

Prosecutors told the court that Kang’ethe was spotted on surveillance video driving at different locations in Lowell area and the neighbouring towns with Ms Mbitu’s body still in the car. The vehicle with the body inside was also spotted at his home four times within the 30-hour period.
