Outside the Church
Many preachers of small or new churches have employment outside of the church. Increasingly, preachers are pursuing church leadership as a second career. When initially hired, preachers pf are often required to work under a probationary period with less pay. Some of them choose to maintain their outside employment to supplement their income during this probationary term. Other preachers work in outside employment throughout their career, especially in situations where the church is not able to pay them an adequate salary.
Guest Appearances
Preachers make numerous guest appearances at other churches and religious functions. When a preacher serves as a guest leader for another church or function, the congregation usually provides a monetary gift for the appearance. This gift is not considered income but it is. Preachers also make appearances and give speeches at religious conferences and events, where they are paid for their time. This can include weddings, baptisms and funerals performed outside of their home church.
