Celebrated Kenyan volleyballer Janet Wanja has died. Wanja died at a Nairobi hospital where she was receiving treatment for gallbladder cancer.
“The family of Janet Wanja would like to announce her passing on after a brave battle with gallbladder cancer. Our sincere and deepest gratitude goes out to Kenya Pipeline Company for walking the journey with us from the beginning, and tirelessly providing all she needed in terms of medical support,” her brother Kelvin Kimani said.
Wanja was diagnosed with cancer of the gallbladder shortly after returning to Kenya from the Paris 2024 Olympics. She was a trainer with the Malkia Strikers at the Olympics Games in Paris, France. Her diagnosis was confirmed by Kimani.

Wanja has died at the age of 40 years. Apart from playing for the national team, she was also a player with the Pipeline volleyball team. She made her debut at the Olympics during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece where she played for team Kenya.
She left the national team in 2017 but went on to play for her club until 2019 when she retired. During her long and highly celebrated career, Wanja bagged multiple awards for being the best setter in the game.
