Blow to Students as Kenyatta University Raises Food Prices

Blow to Students as Kenyatta University Raises Food Prices

Kenyatta University (KU) students will have to dig deeper into their pockets to afford meals after the institution revised the prices of food sold in its stores.

The University’s Office of the Registrar has recently published an updated price list in response to the surging cost of food items.

KU students seeking to have their meals at the school’s mess will now pay Sh15 for chapati, a Sh5 jump from the previous Sh10.

The most expensive dish in the latest changes is chicken and fries, with each item now priced at Sh100, followed by beef (70), a packet of milk (Sh60), minced meat stew (Sh50), Mukimo (sh50), Githeri (Sh40), sausages (Sh40) and mashed potatoes (Sh40).

Ugali, beans stew, egg curry, smokies, and Ndegu have been priced at Sh25 each and Sh10 for mandazi. According to sources, the new prices took effect on Tuesday, August 22.

The new price list spells doom to students who are struggling to access funding from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) amid the high cost of living.

HELB  recently announced its inability to provide loans to undergraduate university students and technical college students due to defaulters who have not been repaying their loans. This has left approximately 140,000 students without funding.
