Kelvin Kang’ethe who murdered Maggie Mbitu at US airport arrested in Nairobi club

Kenyan national Kevin Kangethe, who has been a fugitive, has been arrested by police detectives while partying in Westlands. He is facing allegations of murdering his US-based girlfriend, Margaret ‘Maggie’ Mbitu.

The man has been on the run since November 2023, when he reportedly fled to Kenya from the States. It is alleged he murdered Maggie, a nurse, between October 30th and November 1st in Boston.

He went on to stash the body in the car’s boot, where it was later discovered at Boston’s Logan Airport.

Kevin Kangethe who had a prime Interpol bounty on his head, was arrested at a club in Westlands after the police received a tip-off on his whereabouts.

“We have a man believed to be the suspect who is wanted in the US over murder. We are waiting for more profiling to know the way forward,” a senior official involved in the probe stated.

Should he be positively identified as the killer, the Office of the DPP will liaise with foreign officers to extradite Kang’ethe to America, where he will face justice.

Maggie’s mother told the media that her daughter was planning to break up with the suspected killer. After the Red Notice issued by Interpol on the man, DCI detectives have been visiting a home in Thogoto, which was suspected to be his hideout.

“We urge this suspect to turn himself to authorities before he or anyone else gets hurt. We are making every effort possible to apprehend him and to begin the process of seeking justice for Margaret Mbitu and those mourning her tragic death,” said an official.

Sleuths believe that Maggie was last seen leaving work in Halifax at around 11 pm on October 30th. Sometime later after that, investigators stated that she was murdered.

On November 1st, her body was discovered in the car by police officers. Authorities are convinced that the 40-year-old murdered Maggie, before buying a plane ticket for a 16-hour flight to Nairobi. He ran away to avoid prosecution.

Further investigations revealed that Kang’ethe bought the tickets in the early hours of October 31st, just hours after Maggie was last seen at work.

Maggie lived with her family. Her family noted that on October 30th, she drove 62 kilometres away, in her Toyota Venza, to see him. This was the last time they saw her alive.

Evidence gathered from the deceased’s body revealed that Kang’ethe was the last person she was with. It is, however, unknown whether Maggie knew her partner was travelling to Kenya.

Maggie was a naturalised citizen of America. She graduated from Quincy College in 2018 and worked for Bamsi, a non-profit organisation.
