Kibugu brothers shine as Njoroge Clinches first PGK equator tour title at Sigona

It was a Kibugu affair, as the two formidable brothers went neck-and-neck in the intense final round of the seventh leg of the PGK Equator Tour at Sigona Golf Club on Sunday.

Claiming the title was the younger brother, Njoroge Kibugu, who fired a superb 9-under-par 279 over four rounds to secure his first PGK Equator Tour victory. He finished one stroke ahead of his elder brother and Safaricom-sponsored Mutahi Kibugu, who carded an impressive 8-under-par 280 to tie for second position with fellow Safaricom teammate Samuel Njoroge.

“It was amazing playing against my brother. I was a bit tense, especially when he overtook me around hole 9, but I managed to compose myself and recover. Our family was so happy, cheering and rallying behind us. For them, it didn’t matter who won, it was about the great game we played and the healthy pressure we put on each other,”said Njoroge Kibugu.

Co-Op post

“I would say this has been one of the most competitive tournaments so far. Going head-to-head with my brother Njoroge was incredible, everyone brought their A-game, despite the pressure. What really matters is the quality of golf we all played. The fairways were really good, and I’m very pleased with my performance. As Team Safaricom, this is a fantastic result. We continue to lead the overall standings, and with two legs remaining, we’re aiming to finish at the top.” Said Mutahi Kibugu.

Taking fourth place was Snow Greg with a 5-under-par 283, followed closely by Edwin Mudanyi, who carded a 4-under-par 284. Dismas Indiza, David Wahu, Mohit Meiratta, CJ Wangai, and Kennedy Abuto rounded out the top 10 with scores of 287, 290, 291, 291, and 293, respectively.

With two legs remaining, the Safaricom team, comprising Mutahi Kibugu, Samuel Njoroge, Mohit Mediratta, and Mathew Wahome, continues to dominate the leaderboard, sitting top of the overall standings with 7,575 points.

Kenya Airways Team currently occupies second place with 5,635 points, followed closely by Visa Team in third with 4,745 points. John Walker Team sits fourth on 4,460 points, with NCBA Team in fifth place, while Britam Team rounds off the top six with 1,810 points.

The race is intensifying as players battle for crucial qualification points toward the 2025 Magical Kenya Open and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Safaricom has committed KES 3 million over a three-year period to support the four professional golfers mentioned above.
