By Brian Kipchumba

The Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KOTDA) has officially applied for a license to produce and supply electricity.

Konza Technopolis is one of the major projects under Kenya’s Vision 2030 development plan. Its goal is to create a world-class smart city that brings together businesses, workers, residents, and essential urban services in one thriving community.

The city aims to deliver advanced solutions through Information, Communications, and Technology (ICT), supported by high-quality infrastructure and a governance system that fosters business growth and innovation.

In a notice dated March 4, 2025, KOTDA announced that its power system would include 66/11 kV substations, 11 kV distribution lines, 11/0.415 kV substations, and electricity retail at both 11 kV and 0.415 kV voltage levels.

“The Authority stated that the request for a license to distribute and supply electricity aligns with the requirements outlined in Section 119, Subsection (3) of the Energy Act 2019,” the statement read.

The agency further stated that it plans to submit its application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on April 4, 2025.

KOTDA assured the public that granting the license would not negatively impact any public institutions or local authorities.

“A copy of the application, with confidential details kept private, will be available for the public to review at the applicant’s registered office once it has been submitted,” the statement read.

Konza Technopolis also encouraged individuals, local authorities, companies, or groups who wish to oppose the application to submit their objections.

The letter stated that the objection letter should be directed to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

To ensure the letter reaches the right desk, the envelope must be clearly labeled on the outside as “Electric Power License Objection.”

Additionally, a copy of the objection must also be sent to KOTDA’s registered office.

“Forward your letter of objection to KOTDA registered office at 7th Floor, Konza Complex, P.O. Box 190150, Konza Technopolis, in the Republic of Kenya,” the notice read.
