Tax returns: The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will offer tax services through the weekend effective 2nd June however Huduma centers will not offer tax services Saturdays and Sundays for the period.

As the June 30th deadline approaches pressure is mounting on the Taxman to meet its revenue targets after National Treasury raised the revenue collection targets for the Kenya Revenue Authority by Ksh.25 billion for the fiscal year ending June 2022.

In trying to justify the upward variation which covers both tax and non-tax revenues treasury is expected to increase by 17.1 percent or Ksh.18 billion. 

However, KRA revised income tax downwards by 1.9 percent or Ksh.16 billion to Ksh.819 billion on the back of the underperformance of corporate tax and withholding taxes in six months to December 2021. In a move aimed at ensuring tax compliance and meeting the target, KRA will be extending work hours.

In a notice published in the dailies, KRA indicated

“…would like to notify taxpayers that Tax service offices and the contact centre will extend working hours in June to support taxpayers in filling or returns”

Effective 2nd June till 30th June tax services will be offered Monday to Friday from 7am to 6.30 am, and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Huduma centres will of similar services Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, but close over the weekend.

How to file your tax returns

The KRA contact centre will from 20th -30th June operate all week Monday to Friday between 6 am and midnight, as well as Saturday and Sunday from 9 am till 4 pm. This provides an extended window to taxpayers with queries on filing returns.

The Kenya Revenue Authority surpassed its revenue performance in the first half of the Financial Year 2021/2022 after collecting Sh976.659 billion against a target of Sh929.127 billion hopes to replicate the same performance premised on increased tax compliance and economic recovery post COVID-19.
