Bizna Kenya will next month hold its 2018 inaugural organic farming tour. The tour, which will be held on March 24, this year will take participants to the Kenya Institute of Organic Farming is based in Juja, along the Thika-Nairobi super-highway.
It will start at the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) where participants will be picked up. Each participant will be required to pay Sh. 2,500 only for the tour. This will be an all-inclusive price that will also cater for transport, lunch and water.
During the day’s tour, there will two hour classroom sessions which will be followed by a two hour tour around the farm. Thereafter, participants will have one hour for a question and answer session.
The program for the day would encompass teachings such as introduction to organic farming soil and water conservation, soil tillage with emphasis on container gardening for city residents, soil feeding through organic fertilizers, cropping systems, organic pest management, organic livestock husbandry, organic standards, certification and marketing.
The organic institute is an open shamba with various dry-land crops- maize, mbaazi, njahi fruit trees- pawpaws, mulberry trees, amaranthus (terere), kales, spinach.
There’s also an apiary, a piggery unit, shoats unite of sheep and goats, chicken units, whater conservation system, organic fertilizer compost system. There institute also offers books on organic farming farming, eggs, rice and vegetables.
