FiveSok was launched in June 2016 by a team of young entrepreneurs with a daunting task of helping Kenyans combat the increasing unemployment rate in the country. While the company is still young and has a long way to go before realizing its missions, their greatest accomplishments has been through the large strides taken towards bridging the gap between professional experts and service seekers.
The platform connects service seekers to experts of small scale services such as tutoring, web designing, art work, etc.; however, unlike other classified platforms, FiveSok only compiles small services that range from Ksh.500 – Ksh.5,000. Upon successful completion of each task, a user can then earn positive ratings from their clients, which in turn leads to more visibility and sales.
FiveSok has now launched an upgraded version of the original platform, based on feedback from 5,000 users. The new platform has been developed with a focus on augmenting the user experience, and includes a functionality that enables for people to request for services that they are seeking. The requests are then open for any qualified person to apply for. Mr. Emmanuel Soroba, the founder and CEO, was previously employed in different roles around the world while working in the hospitality industry. He has since stepped aside from that line of work, turning his focus to fulfilling his entrepreneurial aspirations of providing Kenyans with tools and opportunities that enable them to enhance their skills, and develop to levels far beyond the employment barriers.
Speaking about the new platform, Mr. Soroba commented that, “the sheer amount of people that we have seen directly benefit through the platform has honestly inspired us to adopt this new model. By enabling people to openly request for services that they seek, FiveSok can compile and present the skilled Kenyans with a comprehensive list of actual people that are looking for their services. The requests are open for anyone with the expertise to apply, which is a good starting point for skilled people that are looking for part-time work, Clifford Owino and MaryPrisca, who head the development team, quickly rose to the challenge after Emmanuel had initially proposed the idea, and have since found themselves in the midst of a project that is now offers a silver lining to many Kenyans
