But how did he start his journey and what does he earn? Well, the radio presenter at Radio Africa’s Classic FM says that when he first joined Kiss 100 FM his starting salary was Sh. 380,000.

Instead, he got a job as a truck driver and later joined the car export business, out of which he’d export and sell cars to Kenyans.

It was only after returning home that Maina applied for a voice-over job which set him on the path to becoming one of Kenya’s best presenters. He started off at Capital then went on to be a swing presenter at Nation FM which was starting out.

“Nation FM was starting, I moved to Nation FM. I used to be very mechanical and I was told ‘be Kenyan.’ one day there was a riot, and I had brought a new car. When the University of Nairobi students rioted they used to come to Nation and they smashed my car. That is the day I flipped and my boss said ‘that is what I need on radio,” he told Churchill, with whom he hosts the morning show at Classic FM.

After working at Nation for a while, Maina got a call from Patrick Quarcoo who asked to meet him at a Nairobi restaurant. At the meeting, Maina was handed a big money offer. “He asked me how much I was being paid, and I told him the guys were paying me Sh. 180,000. I was being paid Sh. 60,000. He then told me he was going to start me off at Sh. 380,000. You know you pretend not to look desperate, so I told him to give me time to think,” he said.

Maina said that he returned speedily to Nation where he told them that he had received an offer he could not refuse. They failed to counter the offer and Maina moved to Kiss FM.
