How you will henceforth be making payments for SGR, normal train services

Kenyans seeking to commute via train will now be making payments through the e-Citizen platform, Kenya Railways has announced.

Announcing the changes on Tuesday, January 16, Kenya Railways said the order would affect all services, including cargo transport and commuter trains.

“We hereby notify members of the public of the public that payments for all services shall only be made through the e-citizen platform in line with Presidential directive,” Kenya Railways announced.

For the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the commuter trains plying different routes in Nairobi, passengers will be required to use Paybill: 222 222 followed by an account number consisting of the letters KRCC, a hyphen and the passenger’s name.

You will then enter the amount and PIN to complete the transaction after which a ticket will be issued to you. Commuters can also access the train services and make payments using the USSD code *222#.

The new directive will also affect customers using Kenya Railways terminals, parking at their facilities, those using their restaurants, visiting Kenya Railways museum and students admitted at Kenya Railways Institute.

They will all be required to make payments through the new system using a unique code issued by Kenya Railways.

President William Ruto earlier directed that all government agencies use a unified payment platform.  Ruto said the move is aimed at ensuring efficiency and curbing data losses.

“From today all government agencies should use the government paybill manned by the National Treasury. All other paybills will be shut down” Ruto said.

“There is a dedicated government pay channel, 222222. The expectation of the government is that all government revenue must now use the pay channel so that Treasury can have sight of every government service that is paid for,” He added.
