Franklin Mark Gogo, also known as Mc Gogo, has transformed himself into a Kenyan household name in the entertainment scene.
The young man is famous for his humorous commentary at events and parties, where he describes himself as a “Crowd Energizer.”
At just 25 years old, Gogo has established himself as the go-to event MC in Kenya. His remarkable emceeing skills have resonated with many young people, earning him the title of “The Voice of Gen Z.”
Gogo’s witty and entertaining personality has made him a favourite among partygoers seeking an escape from their everyday routine.
His seamless connection with the crowd and baritone voice, whenever he takes the microphone, have seen him land many corporate and international deals.
Unknown to many, Mc Gogo is akin to the many Kenyan youths who are making money away from the conventional career paths that would have them line up for blue-collar interview jobs. Mc Gogo studied for a BA in Counselling Psychology from Kenyatta University.
In a YouTube interview with Phil Director, MC Gogo admitted that he found his niche in the entertainment industry and has excelled in it. Gogo was brought up in a humble family that resided in Dandora. After high school, he landed a job as a primary teacher that paid him Sh. 3,000.
He revealed he first tried his hand at being an MC at a church event at around 17 years old. He would be entrusted with small gigs in which he would outperform himself and gradually, he’d land events such as weddings.
When the Covid-19 lockdown period set in, his lucky stars began aligning. Together with a group of friends, MC Gogo would entertain his audience through the digital space.
The dedication he invested during this time eventually yielded results. He posted videos of his work on Facebook, drawing an increasingly large audience.
However, it was one TikTok video he did that truly propelled him to fame. This video gained more than 1 million views in just 24 hours. The grind rubbed a great impression on his audience.
The hypeman honed his skills in the subsequent years, seizing contracts in clubs, weddings and other social events. He has been able to secure deals to perform internationally at top clubs in well-revered places such as Dubai.
In the interview, MC Gogo narrated that his job comes with its fair share of challenges, particularly since he works in areas with intoxicated people.
He narrated a memorable experience during an Eldoret show when a lady from the audience disrupted him by tightly grabbing him.
When security noticed, they hurriedly got her away from the main man. As soon as she was back in her seat, the lady threw a glass at MC Gogo who was casually performing his dances on stage.
In recent weeks, Mc Gogo has been trending on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter). Some netizens claim that his content is better suited to high school students.
However, Gogo dismissed these statements, saying that everyone is free to listen to whoever they want to. He advised that if one did not resonate with his content, there are many other alternative entertainers that they can look for, rather than trolling him.
With close to 800,000 followers on TikTok, over 220,000 on Instagram, and more than 40,000 fans on Facebook, Mc Gogo’s rate card doesn’t come cheap. The frequently booked hype man commands a fee of over Sh. 100,000 per event.
