The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended all Modern Coast buses from operating on Kenyan roads.
This follows a deadly accident that occurred at the dreaded Nithi Bridge black spot. The accident has so far claimed 34 lives.
“Following a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday 24 July, 2022 at the Nithi Bridge, Tharaka Nithi County that has since claimed the lives of 33 passengers, the Authority hereby halts the operations of Modern Coast Express Limited,” the NTSA said in a statement.

The NTSA said that this suspension will apply to all the 31 vehicles belonging to the Modern Coast Express Limited company and operating on the following routes:
1. Nairobi-Mombasa
2. Mombasa-Mtwapa – Kilifi- Malindi – Witu- Mpeketoni-Lamu
3. Nairobi-Nakuru-Kisumu-Kakamega- Busia
4. Nairobi-Nakuru- Kisumu-Eldoret- Malaba
5. Nairobi-Narok-Kisii-Homabay-Migori – Isibania
6. Mombasa-Makindu – Wote – Kitui -Machakos
7. Nairobi-Thika – Embu – Meru – Maua

“A thorough multi-agency investigation into the crash and an evaluation of the operator’s safety operational standards is currently underway,” the NTSA said.
“We condole with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this tragic crash and wish quick recovery to those undergoing treatment.”
